ACT and NSW volunteer bushfire brigades will be able to use each others' radio frequencies under a new deal being brokered by authorities in each jurisdiction.
They are also pursuing new laws which will give volunteer firefighters in the ACT and NSW the legal protection to fight a fire outside their border first if they are the closest to it.
NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Phil Koperberg met ACT Emergency Services Commissioner Peter Dunn in Canberra yesterday.
A Emergency Services Bureau spokesman said it was part of the ongoing consultation the ESB was conducting with key stakeholders about the legislation which will create a new emergency services authority by July 1.
Mr Koperberg said the meeting was constructive and frank.
