HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Shortwomen appear to be at increased risk of cesarean section and are more likely to require anesthesia services than their taller counterparts, Dr. Connie DiMarco said at the annual meeting of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology.
In a retrospective study of records from 3,663 nonobese, nulliparous women delivering singletons, Dr. DiMarco, a resident at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., and colleagues found significantly increased rates of cesarean section among women who were shorter than 157.5 cm, compared with women who were shorter than 165.1 cm (22% vs. 19%).
