MORE than 100,000 New Zealanders suffering severe migraines might get some welcome relief from an unusual source -- vegetables.
Victoria University genetic epidemiologist Rod Lea has made the suggestion after discovering a gene that absorbs folate -- a substance found in vegetables, bread and some supplements -- is linked with the most severe form of the debilitating condition, migraine with aura.
"In migraine with aura sufferers, there is a mutation of the gene, which causes an increased incidence of the protein homocysteine in the blood."
