As the world prepared for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, the United States Sports Academy began celebrating its 30th anniversary of service to the world through sport education, and reflected on the performance of the U.S. team in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Simply put, it was that U.S. performance in the 1972 Munich Games, which, in large measure, served as a motivating factor in the genesis of the United States Sports Academy. And as "the Academy," as it is commonly known, presses on into the new millennium, a pause to reflect on its roots reveals an institution of higher learning which has earned great academic integrity and international notoriety, and has exhibited consistent dedication to its mission and purpose.
The Academy was founded in 1972 by Dr. Thomas P. Rosandich, its current President and Chief Executive Office. Highlighted by the inferior U.S. performance at the 1972 Munich Olympiad, it was widely recognized that there was a need in the United States for a national school of sport. The poor performance was due largely to poor administration, the lack of medical support, and unscientific coaching and training.
