Searching for ways to reform college sports, the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics is considering recommending excluding freshmen from NCAA contests.

The plan would give first-year students and community college transfers a year to mature and get comfortable with their school's academic requirements, perhaps leading to better grades and graduation rates.

Predictably, some coaches of male teams thought the plan would be unfair to good students, although the overall graduation rate for male basketball players is just 44%.
