Maybe it's because Nebraska's dominant football culture devalues women. Or Nebraska's emphasis on agriculture and science. Or a tough old boys' network.
For whatever reason, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln ranks dead last among its 10 peers in hiring and keeping female faculty, according to a recent survey by the American Association of University Professors.
Women made up just 21% of faculty in 1996-1997 and increased that by four bodies for 2002-2003, so the percent was just 23%. In contrast, the largest hike was at Purdue University IN, which added 115 female professors, a 41% increase over the same time period.
