Minority applications drop 23% at Michigan.(Newswatch)(University of Michigan)
Total applications to some public schools are dropping because of requirements for essay exams, and applications by minorities are dropping even more. At the University of Michigan, the total number of applicants for the next first-year class is down 18%, but it's 23% for blacks, Hispanics and American Indians.
Michigan officials blame last year's Supreme Court decision rejecting a point system favoring minorities in admissions, and also critics of affirmative action seeking a Michigan ballot initiative that would ban all consideration of race in admissions and government hiring.
