Mount Mary College in Milwaukee WI was founded in 1913 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame to educate women to transform the world. The small Catholic women's college links women's leadership to a deep sense of social justice. Now its Women's Leadership Program cultivates awareness and skills with new intentionality. As one sister quips, the college always prepared women leaders, but now they have to talk about it too.
When Dr. Patricia O'Donoghue came to Mount Mary as president in 1997, she asked faculty and alumni how the mission played out in student learning. Where did leadership for social justice show up in the curriculum? How could it be made more explicit?

From those conversations emerged a leadership model that links leadership with taking responsibility for social justice. Leaders empower others by:
* helping establish a common vision
* inspiring others and foster their gifts
* encouraging teamwork
