American downtowns are resurging, their gutted buildings making way for art galleries, farmers' markets and fountains.

Just ask Doyle Hyett.

"These little pieces of real estate are just cookin' from coast to coast," says Hyett, a consultant who specializes in the rebuilding of older business districts.

He came to town last week to lead what was billed as an economic summit about the revitalization of Dearborn Street, Englewood's original "downtown."

The community, with the help of Sarasota County, has invested a lot of time and money trying to regenerate a flourishing commercial center in one of its oldest…
