RUSSEL WARD'S The Australian Legend is a classic study of Australian identity, politics and literature, particularly the nineteenth-century ideals of the Bulletin school of writers. Ward's analysis of the political sensibilities and egalitarian ethos of the late nineteenth century focuses on labour, the pastoral frontier and the Victorian gold rush.
