BIRDS WALKING 
 
   Who would think the pelican 
   with his lumbering gait on land 
   could lift his great body, 
   wheel the air so suavely, 
   and touch down 
   like a Sunderland, 
   pluming foam, 
   perfectly graceful? 
 
   Or consider gulls. Such designer birds 
   with their grey and white, 
   their black-tipped tails, 
   red legs scissor-snipping 
   a  cross the sand 
   in that sort of run
