THE FURORE over gay marriage which has seized the United States has not yet had more than the palest reflection in this country, though there are some who are doing their best to beat the issue up. Just what in fact does the homosexual lobby want, and what harm would it do to grant their wishes? In the first place, the argument is about the legal status of marriage in civil society, not about the religious status of marriage. That is, no legal authority can (yet) insist that any religious group accept that a couple of whatever kind must be considered married according to their rites and therefore married (in their view) in the eyes of God.
