Orkney's international ultradistance runner William Sichel will attempt to gain world champion-ship selection when he competes in this weekend's Brno indoor 48-hour race in the Czech Republic.
Sichel, who has represented Great Britain 11 times since 1996, will try to achieve the UK world team selection target of 143 miles/ 230km during the first 24 hours of the race.
"This is the only chance I've got of running for Britain at the world championships in May," said Sichel. "I'll run hard for the first 24 hours to try and make the qualifying distance, then I'll take a break and enjoy the second half of the race." The gruelling contest will be run on a 250m concrete circuit within a large exhibition centre. Lap counting will be controlled by computer chips on runners' shoes. Running direction will be reversed every four hours.
