Sarasota guide Jonnie Walker just chuckled.

He and his clients were catching so many large Spanish mackerel in New Pass early last week that it was ridiculous.

"We're moving," said Walker, who runs the Bay Walker out of New Pass. "We've caught plenty. They're hitting on every cast."

Walker and clients were casting Diamond Jigs into the schools of mackerel that were chasing glass minnows into New Pass.

Spanish mackerel are a sure sign of spring. The water is warming and baitfish are showing up in the Gulf of Mexico.

Spring means different fish and different tactics throughout the area.
