Lifestyle intervention as well as metformin can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in people with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), according to findings from the Diabetes Prevention Program announced at a meeting held at the National Institutes of Health.
The results are a "targeted answer" for the 10 million people who have IGT, said study chairman Dr. David M. Nathan of Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.
An advisory group will begin to answer several practice issues raised by these findings: Should there be routine screening for IGT? Is an oral glucose tolerance test necessary, or will a fasting glucose level suffice? Will insurers pay for the test?
