QUEBEC CITY -- Endometritis is common among women with certain lower genital tract infections that may serve as markers for subclinical pelvic inflammatory disease, Dr. Harold C. Wiesenfeld reported at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology.
This is an important finding, because most women with tubal factor infertility have no clinical history of prior symptomatic pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and it's thought that subclinical PID may actually be an underlying cause.
In a study involving 556 women, Dr. Wiesenfeld and his colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh and Magee-Women's Hospital evaluated the relationship between lower genital tract infections and endometritis diagnosed histologically or by plasma cell tests. All study participants were deemed at high risk of lower genital tract infections but had no clinical evidence of acute PID.
