November 9, 2001 marked the first day of the most recent round of negotiations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Delegates from the 142 member nations met in Doha, Qatar and one of the key agenda items was further negotiation on the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS). This agreement extends the free trade agenda of corporate control into the service industry, which includes a multitude of areas from travel agents and construction to health care, education, municipal service and culture.

Very few representatives of non-governmental organizations and other citizen-based groups were able to attend. As a result, November 9th was declared an International Day of Action Against the WTO. Around the globe, millions of people fed up with corporate …
