A Kenya-descended politician has surged into the lead just days before voters in the state of Illinois choose candidates for a seat in the United States Senate.

Mr Barack Obama is now comfortably ahead of his closest competitor in the race to represent the Democratic Party in the Senate, according to poll results published yesterday.

Support for Mr Obama among likely Democratic voters in Illinois has soared from 15 per cent in a poll taken three weeks ago to 33 per cent in the latest opinion survey. The runner-up in the seven-person race trails Mr Obama by 14 percentage points, according …
