The combination of rosiglitazone (Avandia) and an amylose-free diet results in marked and sustained weight loss in non-diabetic hyperinsulinemic obese patients, Dr. Ritchie C. Shoemaker reported at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society.
Results of a 40-patient, 12-week, open-label pilot study of rosiglitazone and an amylose-free diet were impressive. In the 30 patients who were compliant with the amylose-free diet, the average weight loss was 1.5 pounds per week in women and 1.7 pounds per week in men.
LDL cholesterol levels dropped by 10% and HDL cholesterol levels rose by 4.6%. Both men and women averaged a 1.6-inch decrease in waist circumference, said Dr. Shoemaker of Edward W. McCready Hospital, Crisfield, Md.
