SAN FRANCISCO -- Lesbian and bisexual women reported more physical and mental morbidity, had more difficulty getting health care, and were less likely to undergo preventive health screenings, compared with heterosexual women in a telephone survey of 4,135 Los Angeles women.

Lesbians were significantly more likely to report depression and less likely to rate their overall health as excellent, compared with heterosexuals. Bisexuals reported significantly more days per month with poor physical health, compared with heterosexuals, Dr. Allison L. Diamant reported at a conference sponsored by the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association.

In a univariate analysis, heart disease also was more common among lesbians, but lesbians tended to be older than the other women in this probability-based sample from the 1999 Los Angeles County Health Survey.

Being lesbian was associated with more days of poor mental health in the past month; being bisexual was associated with more days of poor physical health. These findings came from a multivariate analysis that controlled for age, race, ethnicity, income, insurance status, and self-perceived health status.

About 30% of all women in the study had no medical insurance, irrespective of sexual orientation. Lesbians were nearly three times and bisexuals were nearly four times as likely as heterosexuals to report difficulty in accessing health care, compared with heterosexuals.

Finances were more of a problem for both lesbians and bisexuals in obtaining physician care or prescription eyeglasses, although levels of income, education, and employment did not differ by sexual orientation.

Preventive health services reached fewer lesbians, who were half as likely to have had a Pap smear or clinical breast exam and one-tenth as likely to have had a mammogram in the previous 2 years, compared with heterosexual women, said Dr. Diamant, who is a general internist at the University of California, Los Angeles.

INTRODUCTION Antigay bias is a well-documented social problem among men. Women, on the other hand, appear much less likely to show antigay bias. Some researchers have argued that women do show antigay bias, but that their bias is against lesbians exclusively (Kyes & Tumbelaka, 1993); however,
