SAN FRANCISCO -- Testing for antithyroid antibodies in maternal blood during pregnancy can help predict which women will later develop postpartum blues, Dr. Peter P.B. Yeo said.
Women with the antibodies are the most likely to develop postpartum thyroidits, which is associated with postpartum depression, he reported at a meeting on endocrinology and metabolism sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco.
About 4%-8% of pregnant women in the United States develop thyroiditis within 1 year of giving birth, an incidence that has led some clinicians to advocate screening all postpartum women for thyroid disease. Those with current or past thyroid disease should be watched closely in the first year after parturition for signs of postpartum thyroiditis, said Dr. Yeo, professor of clinical medicine at the university.
