QUEBEC CITY -- At least five individuals born to mothers who had Dalkon intrauterine device shields in place during gestation are now reporting neurologic deficits that are possibly associated with the device.
In a series of case reports presented at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. James Allen McGregor of the University of Colorado, Denver, and associates found that among the four women and one man, now ages 26-29 years, all experienced developmental delays and academic failures in addition to spatial orientation deficits.
In all cases the IUD could not be removed or was intentionally left in place throughout the pregnancy Preterm birth and premature rupture of the membranes occurred in three of the deliveries; in two of the cases the mother experienced fever and/or sepsis.
