A Canadian woman participating in a trial of medical abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol has died from sepsis, according to the study's sponsor, the Population Council.
"We don't believe the drug caused the clostridial infection or the death, but we are suspending enrollment in the trial while we investigate," said Christina Horzepa, a Population Council spokesperson.
"This has never happened before, and close to 700,000 women have used medical abortion here and in Europe, half a million of them with the same two-drug combination," Ms. Horzepa said in an interview.
Clostridial uterine infections resulting in septic abortions were common before the legalization of abortion when untrained personnel performed the procedures and nonsterile techniques typically were used. Such infections are rare now but do occur.
