SEA ISLAND, GA. -- If you're cutting 100-[micro]g misoprostol pills to create smaller doses for cervical ripening, you may be giving your patient more or less of the drug than you intended.
That's the conclusion of a study presented by Dr. Mark Williams at an ob.gyn. meeting sponsored by the Medical College of Georgia.
"The pills are very brittle, and we found that most of the time you get significantly more or less than you think in each fragment," said Dr. Williams of the University of South Florida, Tampa.
He cut 12 misoprostol pills using a standard pill cutter and 12 pills freehand using a razor. Pill fragments were weighed and classified according to whether they were accurate--within 10% of the desired weight as defined by U.S. Pharmacopeia standards--or more than 110%, 120%, or 130% of the desired weight.
Pills were more accurately halved when they were cut with a razor than a pill cutter (65% vs. 22%), but both methods yielded an unacceptably high number of large fragments, he said.
In fact, 17% of the fragments cut by pill cutters were more than 130% of the desired weight.
