QUEBEC CITY -- More than one in five women are likely to acquire herpes simplex virus type 2 during their pregnancy if their partner carries the infection, Dr. Carolyn Gardella reported at the annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Partner serologic testing, especially when couples have been together for less than a year, would help identify pregnant women at high risk for contracting primary herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection, said Dr. Gardella of the University of Washington, Seattle.
Previous studies have shown that women who acquire herpes during pregnancy, particularly late in pregnancy, are at high risk of transferring the virus to their infant. Because herpes infection is often asymptomatic, serologic testing of male partners is really the only means of identifying women who are at risk for primary infection during pregnancy.
In a prospective study, the researchers performed serologic testing on 3,192 partners to determine the effect of serologic dissimilarity on the rate of herpes acquisition during pregnancy.
