On October 27, 2002, Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith surpassed Walter Payton's NFL career rushing record of 16,726 yards. Smith finished the 2002 season with 17,162 career rushing yards but was released by Dallas in the offseason and signed with the Cardinals, for whom he gained 256 rushing yards before a season-ending injury in 2003. Flash back to the 1998 season, when Lions running back Barry Sanders ran for 1,491 yards and then abruptly walked away from the game only 1,457 yards shy of Payton's mark.
