SENDAI -- A Miyagi Prefecture police officer has been seriously hurt in a bizarre accident that occurred while he was driving a police car to the scene of a potentially explosive incident, it was learned Monday.

Officials of the Sanuma Police Station in Hasama, Miyagi Prefecture, where the injured officer is stationed, said they dispatched several police officers to a house in its jurisdiction after it was reported that a resident couple was engaged in a violent quarrel and one of them was armed with a hunting rifle.
