The prodigiously talented composer, pianist, prose author, and poet Lera Auerbach, a native of Chelyabinsk, Russia, defected to the United States during the collapse of the Soviet Union. She was about eighteen years old at the time, and had already made numerous professional appearances as a piano soloist and composed a full opera, which was performed on tour throughout the Soviet Union. In 2001, she was invited by Gidon Kremer to be composer-in-residence at the Lockenhaus Festival; twelve of her compositions were performed during her tenure there. Auerbach wrote her Twenty-four Preludes for Violin and Piano in 1999, and dedicated them to violinist Vadim Gluzman and pianist Angela Yoffe, who perform them on this 2002 ...
