Johann Sebastian Bach cast an enormous musical shadow in his own time and after his death by virtue of his towering musical oeuvre, but that shadow was lengthened even further by the generally impressive work of his musical sons, several of whom were among the finest composers of the late baroque and early classical periods. Certainly no one would deny that such a designation applies to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the most illustrious of Johann Sebastian's children. Carl Philipp Emanuel's brother Wilhelm Friedemann and their half-brother Johann Christian have not been quite as enthusiastically celebrated, but as this enjoyable collection of chamber pieces demonstrates, they were scarcely less accomplished or inventive composers.
