CALBAYOG CITY-A town mayor was shot dead Saturday evening by unidentified men inside the cockpit of the city sports complex in what could be the first election-related killing in Eastern Visayas.
Mayor Aniceto Olaje of Tarangnan, Samar, 45, died from a lone bullet wound in the head. One of his police escorts, identified as PO1 Sebastian Pinanggay, was wounded in the right thigh and brought to the Calbayog District Hospital.
Olaje's family said there could have been no other reason for the murder but politics. A third-term mayor, Olaje had fielded his wife Emily, 44, in the town's mayoral race in May under the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrat-Nationalist People's Coalition.
"They (her husband's opponents) wanted to silence him, knowing that without him, my candidacy will be paralyzed," Emily said. "I'm afraid that what they did to my husband will also happen to me," she added.
"I want justice be served to my husband. He was killed helplessly. I beg our authorities to speed up its investigation. Please. I beg them to do that," Emily said, wiping her tears.
