(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
THREE persons, including two pregnant women, were killed when fire gutted a squatters' area along the South Luzon Expressway in Barangay San Antonio, San Pedro, Laguna, early yesterday morning.
Several others were also injured in the four-hour fire.
Calabarzon police director Chief Supt. Reynaldo Varilla identified the fatalities as five-months pregnant Divina Apostol, her 3-year-old son Dagul, and her sister-in-law Florence Encinas, who is said to be three-months pregnant.
Varilla quoted witnesses as claiming that they saw the fire coming from the victims' house at past midnight. He said the fire quickly spread to other houses because of strong winds.
Over 700 families lost their houses in the fire. Varilla said firemen who rushed to the area had a hard time controlling the fire because the area is along SLEX.
"Some fire trucks were forced to take the counterflow to be able to get near the site. Fortunately, the flow of vehicles was smooth at that time," Varilla said.
