SILANG, Cavite-Before he planed in from Atlanta, American Edward Michaels was doubting his future in the game. His swing was a virtual wreck, his confidence low. Worse, the modest wad of cash in his pocket was fast thinning out.
With his wife tagging along to keep his emotions in check, the world turned around yesterday for Michaels as he outdueled history-chasing Filipino amateur Juvic Pagunsan to capture the 88th DHL-Philippine Open golf championship by three strokes at the Langer course of the Riviera Golf and Country Club.
Michaels, who had never finished higher than 26th in all the pro events he had played before deciding to try his luck in Asia, capped his memorable victory with a 2-under-par 69 for a 72-hole aggregate of 282.
He foiled Pagunsan's bid of becoming the first amateur to top the RP Open in 37 years.
The 27-year-old Michaels pulled away early with four birdies on the first six holes then survived a rule infraction in the bunker on the 15th to clinch his career breakthrough.
