WHILE THE nation celebrated the 18th anniversary of People Power on Edsa last week, 26 Filipino-American doctors and nurses from Baltimore and New York were busy transforming the sleepy town of Lubao, Pampanga, into a hospital hub.
The balikbayan patriots who lent their US-honed expertise in pediatrics, internal medicine and surgery were part of a medical-surgical mission sent by the US-based Foundation for Aid to the Philippines. The FAPI was established 18 years ago by Fil-Am doctors who were inspired by the Filipinos' shining moment that had come to be known as People Power.
For five days on Feb. 23-27, the Fil-Am doctors and surgeons treated over 2,000 patients and as many as 500 indigent patients a day.
At the Pineda Sports Center gym, four pediatricians tended to children, while four internists treated adults who have been prescreened by rural health workers under Dr. Rudy Ong.
