JUST stay home today, three big transport groups advised commuters as thousands of jeepney drivers go on strike in more than 100 cities and towns nationwide, starting at 5 a.m., to press their demands for fare increases and a rollback in fuel prices.
Efren de Luna, president of the Philippine Confederation of Drivers and Operators-Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations (PCDO-Acto), said the "skeleton strike" was expected to paralyze 50 percent of the jeepney transport system nationwide.
The PCDO-Acto, the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Piston) and the Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator ng Pilipinas (STOP) are planning to launch a general strike on March 8.
The transport workers are asking the Land Transportation and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for a P1-P2 increase in fares for the first 5 km, and oil companies to reduce their price of diesel to P12.60 per liter.
President Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday expressed confidence that Transport Secretary Leandro Mendoza would be able to handle the situation well.
