By Joo Sang-min The opposition Millennium Democratic Party submitted a complaint Saturday calling for the election watchdog to rule on whether President Roh Moo-hyun and Uri Party leader Chung Dong-young violated the Elections Law.
The number two party finds fault with what Roh said in a news conference to mark his first year in office. The National Election Commission said it would hold a meeting Wednesday and rule on the complaint.
The NEC's decision may determine whether the main opposition Grand National Party and the MDP follow through on their threat to impeach the president on allegations of misconduct. Together the two parties can form more than the two-thirds majority needed to pass an impeachment motion in parliament.
On Feb. 25, Roh urged voters to support the pro-government Uri Party in the April 15 general elections, also saying he spent more than 1 billion won to finance his primary campaign in the MDP presidential candidacy in 2002. This is more than the legal limit on political funding.
In September, a group of Roh's loyalists left the MDP to create the Uri Party. The president also left soon after and said he would join the new party right before the general elections, making the former ruling MDP one of his archrivals.
