Byline: Shippers want transit speed, writes Katrin Berkenkopf
GERMAN owners and KG managers are divided over the future prospects for the so-called super post-panamax ships in the 7,500 plus teu range, a ship finance conference in Hamburg was told.
'Personally, I believe that we will see more direct trades with smaller ships driving the market in future,' owner Bertram Rickmers told the Marine Money forum.
Mr Rickmers, who owns both shipowning company Rickmers Reederei and KG house Atlantic, rejected investing in super post-panamax ships. 'I think shippers are ready to pay a little bit more for faster transit times,' he said.
Demand for large sizes is not the only risk factor he sees. Transhipment costs and hinterland logistics must also be considered, he cautioned. 'The whole super post-panamax concept will not work out if there is port congestion.'
Mr Rickmers believes 2006 will be the next crucial point for the shipping markets.
