THE ship which promises to bring a new dimension to the term aircraft carrier is to start operating for Airbus in June.
The 5,200 dwt ro-ro ship, Ville de Bordeaux, which has been designed to carry the fuselage, wing and tail sections of Airbus' new giant A 380 aircraft, is expected to make its first commercial voyage from Hamburg to Bordeaux with fuselages aboard.
The vessel, which is being completed at China's Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing, is running a month or so behind schedule with the result that it will have to be replaced in April and May by chartered vessels.
Airbus executive vice-president Philippe Delmas said that, with its logistics partners, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs and Leif Hoegh, the company would be using the back-up plan which had been prepared for when the Ville de Bordeauxwas out of action for repairs or other reasons.
The chartered vessel would make one or two trips, pending the arrival of the Ville de Bordeauxin Europe in June.
