Periodization from a New Angle: Assimilation of Civilization One debate over historical periodization among historical materialists has centered on the transition from feudalism to capitalism. Was the Edo period (1603-1867) pure feudalism, late-feudal absolutism or incipient capitalism? That is the debate.
