Just when wrestling is down for the count on many campuses as schools cut teams to save money, high school girls are flocking to the sport and may save it.
The U.S. Girls Wrestling Association reports that nearly 5,000 girls are wrestling this season nationwide, up from 3,700 last year and a more than three-fold increase in the last five years. Most high school girls compete on boys' teams.
Seven colleges and universities in the United States offer the sport, and 20 in Canada. The summer Olympics will have girls wrestling as a medal sport, which is expected to bring a surge in participation.
