Faced with a booming real estate market that puts affordable housing out of reach for most new faculty and staff hires, many California colleges and universities are offering them below-market cost houses and rentals.

With starting pay for new tenure-track faculty at less than $60,000 a year and the median price of a California home more than $380,000,
