Meeting at the NCAA January convention in Nashville, representatives of Division III colleges approved a major policy shift to scale back the intensity of athletics at the schools, reducing the number of matches and practices.

Of the 11 proposals, members approved those to:

* Reduce the length of competitive seasons to 18 weeks in fall and 19 in winter and spring.

* Limit off-season practices to 16 days for most sports, and one competition.

* Eliminate off-season workouts in fencing, gymnastics, rifle, rowing, skiing and swimming.

* End a grandfathered exemption for scholarships to athletes from an endowed fund established before 1979.

* Eliminate redshirting so students must use their eligibility in four years.
