A new study analyzing degrees and hiring in science-related fields reported pervasive bias against women at elite universities, in violation of Title IX.
Women earned 44.7% of the PhDs in the biological sciences nationwide between 1993 and 2002, yet were only 30.2% of the assistant professors at the 50 schools in 2002. In computer sciences women earned 20.5% of the PhDs yet were only 10.8% of assistant professors.
Even in psychology, women earned 66.1% of PhDs but were only 45.5% of assistant professors at the 50 schools.
Conducting the study was Dr. Donna Nelson, an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Oklahoma at Norman, and undergraduate Diana C. Rogers. They studied the number of women at the nation's 50 most elite research universities, based on spending in 14 disciplines related to science.
