Two women lead successful, last-ditch effort to save Grambling State University.(Newswatch)(Brief Article)
Finally recovered from a botched computer conversion in 1998, Grambling State University LA received its first clean audit in three years and won back its accreditation in December 2003.
Accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools meant Grambling students could maintain their eligibility for Pell grants, student loans and other federal financial aid, which about 97% of its students now receive.
Working together to save Grambling were two very powerful women and a host of other dedicated people.
President Sally Clausen was charged with the responsibility of saving Grambling when she was hired to lead the University of Louisiana System in 2001, and she reportedly juggled accounts to make it a financial priority.
Interim President Neari Warner moved up from provost in 2001, after the school went on probation for its financial record-keeping problems, and the president quit.
