It's easy to find sprays, powders, and handheld appliances that claim to be great at lifting stains from carpet. But out tests show that most of them are not much better than ordinary dish detergent and water or 3 percent hydrogen peroxide,
We tested seven chemicals in all, using them on mud, red wine, French dressing, and coffee stains that we applied to untreated white carpeting and allowed to dry overnight. Columns in the Quick Ratings, at right, show which products were excellent or very good on the four specific stains,
Only OxiClean Active could handle more than mud. Even it couldn't remove the oily French dressing stain, however. Capture, the only powder we tested, is also sold as part of a $20 cleaning kit containing a liquid pretreatment. In out tests, the pretreatment improved performance only marginally.
We also tested four handheld scrubbers: Bissell Little Green Proheat Turbo, $100; Hoover SteamVac Jr., $100; Dirt Devil Spot Scrubber, $40; and Bissell Spot Lifter Powerbrush, $40. All were judged poor at dried stains. They are handy for ...
