Problems with a blender we top-rated last year have led us to take a closer look at how we test the durability of these appliances.

Last July, we judged the top-rated Braun PowerMax MX2050 blender a CR Best Buy at $50. Since then, a dozen readers complained that its plastic gear-tooth assembly, which helps drive the blade, quickly broke.

We found no such problems during out original testing. But the Braun didn't fare well in a tougher extended workout. We also retested the comparably priced Krups Power XL6, $65 (discontinued as we went to press).
