LEADING Ulster doctors today cited research on the damage smoking does to the health of children and unborn babies to demand a ban on cigarettes in public places.

They were speaking after the launch of a shock new report by the British Medical Association on Smoking and the Reproductive Life.

Dr Brian Patterson, chairman of the BMA's Northern Ireland Council, said: "We welcome moves already made by Government to try to help tobacco addicts give up this potentially lethal drug but much more needs to be done.
