It's been three years since Mike Helton became the first person who was not a member of the France family to be named NASCAR president. During his tenure, the sport's incredible growth has continued, and it also has undergone considerable change. In a TSN exclusive, Insider Lee Spencer discussed NASCAR's evolvement with Helton.
TSN: With the new point system, how will NASCAR make sure there's no favoritism shown down the stretch, either before or during the final 10 races to determine the champion?
MH: We'll act accordingly to make sure that's not a factor. I've listened to a lot of the college and professional sports when they get down to the final four and to the playoffs, and the commentators say, 'Well, you can get by with that in the playoffs.' I don't think that's completely accurate. Again, I go back to the fact that the Chase for the Championship is not a playoff. This is just a series of races that will be policed the same at the end of the season as they've been early on in the season. If the Chase for the Championship creates reactions by the drivers and crew chiefs to accomplish something that is out of reason, then we'll react to that. And we'll react to eliminate it. The only reason we react to things is so people won't do it again.

MH: I think it's our role to earn that credibility. I think it's our responsibility, with our officials, to do away with the doubt of inconsistency, and that's what we're trying to do. I don't think that our sport is given a fair shake when it comes to its entirety--when it comes to the magnitude of the competition. When the green flag falls for the first time to the checkered flag, our sport is longer, it's much more challenging, it has so many other components to it--the pit stops, the strategy on the racetrack by the drivers, the strategy on pit road by the crew chiefs--and I think that's underestimated. I think it's our role to the fans to earn that credibility. I think this is a step in the right direction.
