UNICEF report spells out costs of vitamin and mineral deficiency.(outcomes of malnutrition)
Deficiencies in basic vitamins and minerals are damaging the health of one third of the world's population and holding back the economic development of virtually every country in the southern hemisphere, concludes a new report from the United Nations Children's Fund and the Canada-based Micronutrient Initiative.
Released at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last month and based on nutrition studies from 80 countries, the "global damage assessment report" finds that vitamin and mineral shortfalls are impairing intellectual development, compromising immune systems, causing severe birth defects and consigning some two billion people to living below their true physical and mental potential.
