DURING THE 1975 SEASON, CINCINNATI REDS second baseman Joe Morgan enjoyed his first of two back-to-back National League MVP campaigns.
Through the course of the '75 season, Morgan led the Reds to the N.L. pennant and first World Series title in 35 years when he hit .327 (fourth in the N.L.), scored 107 runs, stole 67 bases, hit 17 homers with 94 RBI and a league-leading 132 walks in addition to a .471 on-base percentage while pacing all N.L. second basemen with a .986 fielding average (11 errors in 791 total chances).
Morgan's leadership and statistics offensively and defensively not only allowed him to capture N.L. MVP honors, but he was named Baseball Digest's Player of the Year in the December 1975 issue.
Morgan hit .271 in his 22-year career with 689 stolen bases, 268 home runs, 1,650 runs and 1,865 walks (fourth on the all-time chart).
"He was the greatest offensive player I ever managed," says Sparky Anderson. "I don't know of another player who could beat you offensively so many ways. He had the greatest instincts as a player I ever saw."
