HERSHEY, PA. -- Metals in dental implants can cause oral lichen planus or stomatitis, and dermatologists can confirm a metal allergy through dental history, visual observation, and patch testing.
Gold and mercury, the most common metals in dental implants, are also associated with the most reports of oral lichen planus and stomatitis. This relationship is often underrecognized, Dr. Joseph F. Fowler Jr. said at a meeting on contact dermatitis.
Once a patient reports recent dental work and symptoms of oral lichen planus or stomatitis, a metal allergy can be implicated by looking for lesions and inflammation adjacent to metal implants or crowns, said Dr. Fowler of the University of Louisville (Ky).
